We have specific procedures about who handles weapons where they’re stored and we ensure they’re always secured up in the bridge for easy access if we’re not carrying them during the shift. On one ocassion during an approach by pirates, the guard on shift called a “stand to” up on the bridge. When I get there, our operator was looking through binoculars. I grab my weapon and head out port bridge wing only to find the ships bosun waving around an AK47 at the on coming skiff. I almost lost my shit. I stayed calm ordered the bosun back inside the bridge and dealt with the threat. Needless to say I had words with the C/C and his crew to reiterate what our protocols were around weapons.
